BEN BULBEN.net is a web site about the Yeats Family of Sligo. The title BEN BULBEN evokes the distance - both in time and space - from Sligo and the magical YEATS COUNTRY, in the heart of which is the resting place of W. B. Yeats and his wife George in Drumcliffe Churchyard. At the foot of BEN BULBEN the mountain dominating the landscape of Sligo town from the North and facing that other dominant magical cairn topped mountain KNOCKNAREA. MacLysaght's The Surnames of Ireland defines the name YEATS as meaning 'dweller by the gate'. A more appropriate name could not have been given to W. B. and his family; for their vast opus is indeed a 'doorway' to the intellectual 'truth' of life. BEYOND BEN BULBEN invite you to enter through this gate to meet with some contemporaries of the Yeats family including: AE(George Russell) ;George Moore; James Joyce; Oliver St John Gogarty; Lady Gregory; and many other great men and women of literature. |
